Joya: arte + ecología / AiR - collaborative sound collage
In 2021, I was invited to collaborate with visual artist and doctoral researcher Roo Dhissou to produce sound art pieces to accompany a series of short films which she performed, shot and compiled for her Joya Air residency in Spain.
The film pieces were created by Roo in Spain, so I wanted to write a guitar part based in flamenco music that also contained subtle sitar embellishments to tie in with Roo's explorations into her own panjabi heritage.
Along the way, we discovered that flamenco music has roots in Romani gypsy migration from Rajasthan, India to Southern Spain between the 9th + 14th centuries.
We used a collage approach to create both the film and sound pieces, combining field recordings taken by Roo of the Balsa water systems used at Joya Air, some accompanying percussion, synthesizer drones, self-oscillating echos and the flamenco guitar piece.
Finally, we recorded a shanty performed by Roxanne Korda and Oliver Farrow (Infinite Opera) as well as Roo and I in various different tones and intensities.
These works were shown at -
